When it comes to blogging, it can be a cut-throat world.
Always comparing your blog to another blog or comparing yourself another person on Instagram. Always wondering if you are following all the “rules” from bigger bloggers. Always wondering if your content is good enough. I mean honestly, the list goes on and on…
Truth is, I wasn’t being true to myself. I wasn’t blogging about what made ME happy in fear of it not being well liked. In fear of people not liking who I really was.
In fear of my posts not being relatable or shareable.
Trust is…I like beer. I like good drinks and sitting on the patio with a cold one in my hand. But for so long, I was embarrassed about posting that stuff because I thought no one wanted to read it. I thought people would think I was a bad person or a bad parent.
I like food posts. But majority of the time we eat spaghetti for dinner or left overs and we don’t sit around a dinner table because we work opposite schedules and it’s hard. And no one wants to read 37 posts about how I made way too much spaghetti….again.
I don’t like crafting. Like…I REALLY don’t like it. I enjoy the THOUGHT of craft. But honestly…I hate crafting. It gives me anxiety, it never turns out good, and I’m just over it….
Truth is, I put my blog on the back burner because I didn’t think I had anything to share. Ask my husband. I don’t know how many times I said “but there’s nothing to talk about!” or “no one wants to read that!”
I’m over that. This is my life. This is my REAL life. And this is me. THE REAL ME. And I want to share it with people! I’m not exactly sure why, but it’s something I enjoy doing.
And if that is you….if you are a person that has wanted to start a blog but hasn’t…or wanted to start and Instagram account and hasn’t…this is for you. THERE IS ROOM FOR YOU ON THE INTERNET. Don’t ever think “blogging is too saturated” or “I can never be as good as that person”. There is room for you. People want to hear your story. People want to hear about the things you like or the things you cook or the adventures that you take. I promise.
The way you write a recipe is different than the way Carol writes a recipe. The way you enjoy your weekends are different from how Sarah enjoys her weekends. Your recap of Bachelorette might be different from Vanessa’s and DARN IT THE PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT! No two people are the same. And we should quit being scared or embarrassed to share about the TRUE US in fear of…..in fear of WHAT?! People not liking us?! HA!
Here’s your sign. I like you. I want to be your friend. And I want you to know that there is room for you here on the internet. Now go get ’em, tiger!
I needed to hear this today. Thank you for the wonderful reminder!
GIRL. This is literally exactly what I said to my partner last night. I was talking about OG YouTubers and how they’ve kept subscribers for years, even though YouTube is kind of failing right now. And I said they’ve kept their subscribers for so long because they are REAL. It’s like being friends with these people, they don’t fake it. They are just themselves online and we feel like we know them. We watch them eat dinner. We watch them have panic attacks. We watch them get angry and upset and deal with trauma and have boring days and clean out their closets. That’s what people LIKE. You do you and the real subscribers will follow. – Chelsea @ http://www.whatwouldellewoodsdo.com
I have this problem day to day, wondering what should I write on my blog? Will anyone read it? Will enough people read it? Why when I write on my blog page I can get no traffic at all? Why is it that I can’t focus on my blog because I’m too busy reading others blogs trying to figure out why can’t I get any traffic to mine
Your comment about making to much spaghetti (again) made me laugh. Growing up this is something my Dad would do when he attempted to cook us dinner. We actually purchased him a pasta measuring gadget this year for Christmas!
I really like the message of this post. I think as bloggers we have to be a little bit vulnerable because we are putting our lives, values and interests out there for the world to scrutinize. It tests are self esteem and we realize things about ourselves we never saw before.
Congrats on being able to break this barrier and share your life with us ð
Love this article! I felt the same way about homesteading. There are so many homesteading blogs out there that I felt discouraged and thought no one would read mine. Now I write about the life I love to live. Great advice!
I love this post! I’ve recently had similar thoughts and wrote a post about restarting and a post coming up about authenticity in blogging. I really need to hear that there’s a place for me here because I often feel so behind or like I’ll never get anywhere with this. I actually do enjoy crafting ð I’m glad to hear other people are staying true to themselves in their blogging; that’s so reassuring.
This is great, Kaylin. Thanks for being authentic and true to yourself. It can be so easy to second-guess and judge yourself in the blogging world. You have inspired me to be more of who I am and find my voice. Thank you!
